Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the intake of the n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids among pregnant women. N-3 fatty acids are necessary for normal development of fetus' nervous system. 16 pregnant women participated in the research. Daily intakes of α-linolenic (ALA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) fatty acid were estimated by the Food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). It was found that the average daily intake of EPA and DHA among subjects was 236 ± 213 mg and the average daily intake of ALA was 0.43 ± 0.82 g. It was also found that 16% of pregnant women take n-3 fatty acids supplements. In conclusion, the intake of n-3 fatty acids among pregnant women is lower than recommended. Additional education about the importance and sources of n-3 fatty acids is needed in order to ensure their optimal intake among pregnant women.
