Abstract

Integroni su dijelovi molekule DNA koji stječu otvorene okvire čitanja koji su ugrađeni u egzogene kazete gena i pretvaraju ih u funkcionalne gene osiguravajući njihovu točnu ekspresiju. Oni su drevni elementi koji su osnova za genomske složenosti, generiranje fenotipske raznolikosti i adaptivnosti bakerija. Integroni su prvo identificirani na temelju njihove važne uloge u širenju rezistencije na antibiotike. U novije vrijeme, naše razumijevanje njihove važnosti u razvoju bakterijskog genoma je prošireno s otkrićem većih integron struktura, nazvanih superintegroni. Ovi elementi DNA sadrže stotine dodatnih gena i čine znatan dio genoma mnogih bakterijskih vrsta. Nadalje, integroni također mogu imati potencijalno negativno djelovanje, ali i značajnu primjenu u biotehnologiji.

Abstract (english)

Integrons are DNA elements that acquire open reading frames embedded in exogenous gene cassettes and convert them to functional genes by ensuring their correct expression. They were first identified by virtue of their important role in the spread of antibioticresistance genes. More recently, our understanding of their importance in bacterial genome evolution has broadened with the discovery of larger integron structures, termed superintegrons. These DNA elements contain hundreds of accessory genes and constitute a significant fraction of the genomes of many bacterial species. Finally, integrons can also have potentially negative effects, but also an important role in biotechnology
