Abstract

Osnovni cilj rada bio je istražiti kataboličku aktivnost bakterijskih kultura porijeklom iz morskog sedimenta u aerobnoj transformaciji polikloriranih bifenila (PCB-a). Bakterijske kulture Rhodococcus erythropolis R2 i D14 te Rhodococcus ruber Z56 i Z57, uzgojene u mineralnoj podlozi s morskom vodom, rasle su na bifenilu kao jedinom izvoru ugljika i pokazivale 2,3-dioksigenaznu aktivnost. Katalitička aktivnost bakterija proučavana je praćenjem transformacije poznate smjese PCB kongenera. Sve kulture razgrađivale su tri- i tetraklorbifenile, ali također i kongener s pet klorovih atoma (PCB 101). Bakterijske kulture pokazivale su različitu aktivnost u transformaciji kongenera PCB-a i različitu specifičnost prema pojedinim kongenerima. Bakterije Rhodococcus erythropolis R2 i D14 bile su aktivnije u razgradnji kongenera PCB 77, a bakterije Rhodococcus ruber Z56 i Z57 u razgradnji kongenera PCB 101.

Abstract (english)

The objective of this work was to study catabolic potential of marine sediment bacteria in PCB transformation. Bacterial cultures were enriched from different marine sediments collected at urban areas along the Croatian Adriatic coast. Rhodococcus erythropolis strains R2 and D14, and Rhodococcus ruber strains Z56 and Z57 were capable to grow on biphenyl as the only carbon source and they all showed 2,3-dioxygenase activity. The catabolic activity in the transformation of PCBs was examined with PCB mixture of eight congeners. All cultures were capable to degrade tri- and tetrachlorobiphenyls, as well as the PCB congener with five chlorine atoms (PCB 101). The isolates differed in their PCB transformation capabilities. Rhodococcus erythropolis strains R2 and D14 were more active in the degradation of PCB 77, whereas Rhodococcus ruber strains Z56 and Z57 were more active in the degradation of PCB 101.
