Abstract

Kako bi se uklonile organske tvari te nutrijenti (dušik i fosfor) iz otpadne vode najčešće se koristi biološka obrada aktivnim muljem. Poboljšano biološko uklanjanje fosfora (EBPR) mikrobni je proces za uklanjanje većih količina fosfora iz otpadne vode tako što se omoguće uvjeti za rast mikroorganizama koji nakupljaju fosfor (PAO) u obliku unutarstaničnih polifosfata. Za provođenje metabolizma PAO potrebna je izmjena anaerobnih i aerobnih uvjeta. U anaerobnoj fazi PAO asimiliraju masne kiseline, a u aerobnoj fosfate da bi se na kraju aerobne faze izbacio višak mulja s visokom koncentracijom polifosfata i na taj način se uklonio fosfor iz otpadne vode. Kako bi uklanjanje fosfora bilo što uspješnije potrebno je prilagoditi uvjete (pH, temperatura, izvor ugljika, starost mulja, koncentracija masnih kiselina u otpadnoj vodi i dr.) tijekom procesa koji favoriziraju PAO u odnosu na obične heterotrofne bakterije te mikroorganzime koji također anaerobno asimiliraju masne kiseline, ali bez nakupljanja polifosfata. Razvijeno je mnogo konfiguracija EBPR sustava od kojih neki omogućuju uklanjanje samo fosfora iz otpadne vode, a neki istovremeno uklanjanje fosfora i dušika.

Abstract (english)

Biological treatment with activated sludge is the most used technology to remove organic matter and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) from wastewaters. Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is microbial process for removing larger quantities of phosphorus from wastewaters by setting conditions for growth of microorganisms that accumulate phosphorus (PAO) in the form of intracellular polyphosphates. To activate PAO metabolism, it is necessary to cycle activated sludge between anaerobic and aerobic conditions. In anaerobic phase PAO assimilate fatty acids and in aerobic phase PAO take up phosphorus. At the end of the aerobic phase, sludge excess with high concentration of polyphosphates is removed from the process and that way phosphorus is removed from wastewaters. In order to remove phosphorus successfully, it is necessary to optimize conditions (pH, temperature, sludge age, concentration of fatty acids in wastewater, etc.) during the process that favor PAO over the ordinary heterotrophic bacteria and microorganisms that also assimilate fatty acids, but without the accumulation of polyphosphates. Many EBPR systems have been developed, some of which remove only phosphorus from wastewaters and others are capable of simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal.
