Abstract

Usvajanje modernog načina prehrane nakon poljoprivredne i industrijske revolucije dovelo je do razvoja mnogih kroničnih bolesti. Prehrana naših predaka iz paleolitika pokazala se kao model koji bi mogao poslužiti u prevenciji i liječenju dijabetesa tipa 2. Cilj ovog rada je ukazati na ključne karakteristike te iznijeti znanstveno dokazane učinke paleolitičke prehrane. Paleolitička prehrana u vrlom kratkom vremenu dovodi do smanjenja tjelesne mase što je važan faktor za poboljšanje stanja bolesti kod dijabetičara. Smatra se da glavnu ulogu u djelotvornosti ima unos hrane niskog glikemijskog indeksa i niskog glikemijskog opterećenja, povećan unos proteina i prehrambenih vlakana te nizak unos zasićenih masnoća. Rezultat tih karakteristika je niža energetska gustoća i veći stupanj sitosti paleolitičke prehrane. Iako je ovakva prehrana u istraživanjima kratkog trajanja dovela do poboljšanja metaboličkih parametara kao što su razina glukoze i inzulina u krvi, potrebno je istražiti i učinke tijekom dužeg perioda.

Abstract (english)

Adopting a modern diet following the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions has led to the development of many chronic diseases. The diet of our ancestors from the Paleolithic has proven to be a model that could help prevent and treat type 2 diabetes. The aim of this thesis was to point out the key features of the Paleolithic diet and to present its evidence based effects. The Paleolithic diet leads to a weight reduction in a very short period of time, which is an important factor in improving the metabolic parameters among diabetic patients. It is believed that the main contribution to its efficacy is the intake of foods with low glycemic index and low glycemic load, an increased protein and dietary fiber intake, and a low saturated fat intake. The result of these characteristics is the lower energy density and higher satiety effect of the Paleolithic diet. Although such diet has led to improvements in metabolic parameters such as blood glucose and insulin levels in short-term research, it is necessary to investigate its effects over a longer period of time.
