Abstract
Proizvodnja alkohola iz biomase algi započinje uzgajanjem određene količine biomase algi koja pri rastu akumulira složene ugljikohidrate. Nakon žetve i koncentriranja biomase provodi se saharifikacija kojom se složeni ugljikohidrati pretvaraju u jednostavne šećere koje kvasac može prevreti do alkohola. Nakon inokulacije alkoholnom fermentacijom nastaje etanol koji se izdvaja procesima destilacije, rektifikacije i dehidratacije. Postoje još dva načina dobivanja etanola iz algi. Prvi je procesom tamne fermentacije u kojem se dobiva etanol kao jedan od produkata metabolizma algi u spomenutim uvjetima. Drugi način je modifikacijom metaboličkog puta algi pomoću genetičkog inženjerstva u svrhu stvaranja etanola

Production of alcohol from algal biomass is implemented by cultivation of algae which accumulate large quantities of complex carbohydrates. After harvesting and dewatering, algal biomass is exposed to saccharification, process of hydrolyzing complex carbohydrates into fermentable sugars. Adding the yeast, fermentation begins and separation of ethanol from fermentation broth is done by distillation, rectification and dehydration. There are two more ways to produce ethanol from algae. First is the dark fermentation where one of the metabolic products is ethanol. Another way is modifying metabolic path of algae using genetic engineering.
