Abstract

Anabolički steroidi zajednički je naziv za tvari s hormonskim učinkom, bilo da su prirodno prisutni u organizmu ili umjetno sintetizirani u laboratoriju. Danas je područje primjene anaboličkih steroida vrlo široko te obuhvaća prehrambenu industriju, profesionalni i amaterski sport te terapijske svrhe. U ovom radu opisan je razvoj anaboličkih steroida te primjena u navedenim područjima. Primjena donosi i rizike za ljudsko zdravlje temeljene na istraživanjima na životinjama i studijama kod ljudi. Bez obira na način kako su dospjeli u ljudski organizam, anabolički steroidi mogu izazvati negativne učinke na organe imunološkog, kardiovaksularnog, reproduktivnog, živčanog, gastrointestinalnog i endokrinog sustava. Prilikom primjene anaboličkih steroida u obzir treba uzeti sve prednosti i nedostatke te odrediti učinke na organske sustave prema principu doza – odgovor, što daje uvid u zdravstvenu sigurnost primjene anaboličkih steroida.

Abstract (english)

Anabolic steroids are a common name for substances with a hormonal effect, whether they are naturally present in the body or artificially synthesized in the laboratory. Today, the field of anabolic steroids application is very wide and includes the food industry, professional and amateur sports and therapeutic purposes. This paper describes the main points in the history of the anabolic steroids development and the meaning of application in these areas. The application also brings risks to human health based on animal research and human case studies. Regardless of the way they entered the human body, anabolic steroids can cause negative effects on the organs of the immune, cardiovascular, reproductive, nervous, gastrointestinal and endocrine systems. Considering the risks, when using anabolic steroids, all advantages and disadvantages should be taken into account and the effects on organ systems should be determined according to the dose-response principle, which provides insight into the health safety of anabolic steroids.
