Abstract

Prevelika količina fosfora ispuštenog u hidrosferu antropogenom aktivnošću predstavlja jedan od glavnih ekoloških problema današnjice. U mnogim je zemljama postalo obvezatno smanjiti količinu fosfora u otpadnim vodama, bilo kemijskim, bilo biološkim načinom. Napredno biološko uklanjanje fosfora (EBPR) proces je koji se zasniva na aktivnosti i međudjelovanju mikroorganizama sposobnih za skladištenje viška fosfora iz vode – fosfor akumulirajućih organizama (PAO). Rod Tetrasphaera jedan je od tih organizama koji je zadnjih desetljeća privukao pažnju znanstvenika uslijed svojih fermentabilnih i denitrificirajućih sposobnosti, morfoloških i metaboličkih različitosti među vrstama i izobilju u kojem se nalazi u postrojenjima za obradu voda. Također, mulj koji se dobiva kao nusprodukt EBPR procesa posjeduje potencijal vrijednog alternativnog izvora fosfora.

Abstract (english)

Anthropogenic activities resulting in a considerable release of phosphorus into the hydrosphere represent one of the biggest ecological problems nowadays. In many countries, it has become mandatory to reduce the amount of phosphorus in wastewater, either chemically or biologically. Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is a process based on the activities and interactions of microorganisms capable of storing excess phosphorus from water – the phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAO). The genus Tetrasphaera is one of these organisms and has attracted the attention of scientists in recent decades due to its fermentable and denitrifying abilities, morphological and metabolic differences between species and abundance in wastewater treatment plants. Furthermore, the sludge obtained as a byproduct of the EBPR process has the potential to be a valuable alternative phosphorus source.
