Abstract

Kardiovaskularne bolesti (KVB) najčešći su uzrok smrtnosti u svijetu. Prehrana bogata voćem i povrćem povezuje se sa smanjenim rizikom od KVB te brojnih drugih kroničnih bolesti, a takav pozitivan učinak često se pripisuje fenolima koje sadrži takva prehrana. Fenolni spojevi mogu imati pozitivan učinak na faktore rizika važne za nastanak KVB zahvaljujući svojem antioksidacijskom djelovanju. Različiti učinak fenolnih spojeva kod muškaraca i žena rezultat je niza anatomskih i fizioloških razlika koje utječu na farmakokinetiku i farmakodinamiku fenolnih spojeva te na KVB tako što dovode do različite biodostupnosti fenola između spolova, različitog učinka na krvožilnu funkciju, prevenciju KVB te oksidacijski stres. Važnu ulogu imaju i nuklearni receptori, crijevna mikrobiota te životno razdoblje čovjeka. Iako su potrebna daljnja istraživanja, dostupna literatura upućuje na različit utjecaj muškog i ženskog spola kod povezanosti navedenih faktora i rizičnih faktora za KVB.

Abstract (english)

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the most common cause of death in the world. Diet rich in fruits and vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of CVD and other chronic diseases, that positive effect is often attributed to the phenols contained in such a diet. The potential benefits on risk factors important for development of CVD are associated with their antioxidant activity. The different effect of phenolic compounds in men and women are the results of a number of anatomical and physiological differences that affect the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of phenolic compounds and CVD by leading to the sex-dependent bioavailability of phenolic compounds, different effects on vascular function, CVD prevention and oxidative stress. Nuclear receptors, gut microbiota and development during human life also play an important role. Although further researchs are needed, the available literature suggests different influence of sex in the association of these factors and risk factors for CVD.
