Abstract

Cilj ovog rada je procijeniti mogućnost prilagodbe postojećeg uređaja za pročišćavanje otpadnih voda (UPOV), temeljenog na SBR tehnologiji, za pročišćavanje poboljšanim biološkim uklanjanjem fosfora (EBPR). Otpadna voda koja je pročišćavana na UPOV-u je komunalna otpadna voda srednje jakosti s povremenim vršnim vrijednostima organskih spojeva zbog ispuštanja industrijskih otpadnih voda. Provedena je karakterizacija biomase aktivnog mulja s UPOV Koprivnica. Brzina anaerobnog otpuštanja fosfata uz acetat je bila 0,19-2,41 mgP/gVSS.h. Brzina aerobnog unosa fosfata je u svim testovima bila niža od 0,77 mg P/gVSS.h, a brzina anoksičnog unosa fosfata je u svim testovima bila niža od 0,63 mgP/gVSS.h. Provedena su tri dugoročna laboratorijska pokusa. U prva dva pokusa nije uspjela transformacija u mulj koji provodi EBPR zbog nitrata prisutnog tijekom punjenja, koji je sprečavao uspostavu anaerobnih uvjeta. U trećem pokusu je primjenom prihranjivanja u koracima, denitrifikacija uspješno završena i mulj se transformirao u mulj koji provodi EBPR u manje od 43 dana. FISH analiza je potvrdila da izvorni mulj s UPOV-a nije imao PAO, ali je transformiran u mulj obogaćen PAO roda ‘Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis’ nakon 43 dana uzgoja. Temeljem rezultata laboratorijskih pokusa, predložena je prilagodba UPOVa obogaćivanjem otpadne vode hlapivim masnim kiselinama pomoću anaerobne fermentacije influenta, te prihranjivanja u koracima. Rezultati matematičkog modeliranja (BioWin) su pokazali da takva strategija može dovesti do dovoljnog uklanjanja fosfata putem EBPR na ovom UPOV-u, osim u slučajevima značajno povišenih vrijednosti koje bi i dalje trebalo smanjivati dodatkom polialuminijevog klorida.

Abstract (english)

The objective of this study was to assess the possibility of retrofitting an existing full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) based on a SBR technology with the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process. Wastewater which was treated at the WWTP was municipal wastewater of medium strength, with some peak organic loads due to industrial discharge. Characterisation of activated sludge from the Koprivnica WWTP was performed. Anaerobic phosphorus release rate on acetate was 0.19-2,41 mgP/gVSS.h. Aerobic P-uptake rate was in all tests lower than 0.77 mg P/gVSS.h and anoxic P-uptake was lower than 0.63 mgP/gVSS.h. Three long-term laboratory tests were performed. The first two tests failed to transform into EBPR performing sludge because of the nitrate present during the filling, which prevented anaerobic conditions to form. In the third test, by applying step feeding, denitrification was successfully completed and sludge transformed into EBPR performing sludge in less than 43 days. A FISH analysis confirmed that the original sludge from the WWTP did not have detectable PAOs, but was transformed into the sludge enriched by PAOs belonging to the genus ‘Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis’ after 43 days of cultivation. A plant retrofit, based on the results of laboratory experiments, was proposed with the enrichment of the wastewater with volatile fatty acids via primary anaerobic fermentation of influent and step feeding. The results of mathematical modelling (BioWin) showed that such strategy could lead to sufficient P-removal through EBPR in this WWTP, except in cases of significant peak loading, when the dosing of polyaluminium chloride is required.
