Abstract

Mikrobi su iznimno važni za život na Zemlji. Oni su preci svega života i vodeći su sustav za proučavanje evolucije. Mikrobna biotehnologija je grana biotehnologije koja proučava upotrebu mikrobnih stanica za proizvodnju prirodnih proizvoda i rekombinantnih proteina. Mikroorganizmi su naširoko korišteni kao stanične tvornice za industrijsku proizvodnju proteina, biofarmaceutika, finih kemikalija, hrane i pića, bioinsekticida, biognojiva te biogoriva. Industrijska biotehnologija pobuđuje veliko zanimanje uglavnom zato što je to područje povezano sa smanjenom potrošnjom energije, emisijama stakleničkih plinova i stvaranjem otpada, i može omogućiti promjenu paradigme s fosilnih goriva na proizvodnju kemikalija viših dodanih vrijednosti. Uspješne inovacije biotehnoloških proizvoda ili procesa nikada nisu definirane isključivo tehnologijom i znanošću nego i drugim čimbenicima kao što su javno prihvaćanje, inovativno okruženje i podrška vlasti putem dosljedne politike istraživanja i razvoja.

Abstract (english)

Microbes are essential for life on Earth. They are the progenitors of all life and the preeminent system for studying evolution. Microbial biotechnology is the branch of biotechnology that studies the use of microbial cells as factories for producing both natural products and recombinant proteins. Microorganisms have been widely used as cell factories for the industrial production of proteins, biopharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, food and beverage products, bioinsecticides, biofertilizers, and biofuels. Much interest has been generated in industrial biotechnology mainly because this field is associated with reduced energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste generation and may enable the paradigm shift from fossil fuel-based to bio-based production of value-added chemicals. Successful innovations of biotechnological products or processes are never solely defined by technology and science but equally by other factors such as acceptance by the general public, the innovation climate, and support by the authorities through a consistent Research and Development policy
