Abstract

Estrogeni su primarno ženski spolni hormoni odgovorni za razvoj i regulaciju ženskog reproduktivnog sustava te sekundarnih spolnih obilježja. Biološki su aktivni spojevi koji nastaju sintezom iz kolesterola te lako difundiraju kroz stanične membrane u stanice i vežu se te aktiviraju estrogenske receptore. U ovom radu su opisani estrogeni spojevi, njihovi izvori te načini na koji cirkuliraju u okolišu. Prikazana su dosadašnja znanja o razgradnji i polu-životu estrogenih spojeva te ciklusi transformacije estrogenih spojeva. Dio ovog rada daje pregled spoznaja o utjecajima povišenih razina estrogena na zdravlje ljudi, životinja i biljaka te je opisan i način na koji biljke akumuliraju estrogene spojeve. Cilj rada je upozoriti na posljedice koje nastaju kod prekomjerne uporabe estrogenih spojeva u agrikulturi, kao lijekova te dodataka prehrani. Također, i dalje je potrebno provoditi dodatna i detaljnija istraživanja o prisutnosti ovih kontaminanata u eko-sustavima u različitim dijelovima svijeta.

Abstract (english)

Estrogens are primarily female sex hormones responsible for the development and regulation of the female reproductive system and secondary sex characteristics. They are biologically active compounds that are synthesized from cholesterol and easily diffuse through cell membranes into cells and bind to and activate estrogen receptors. This paper describes estrogenic compounds, their sources and the ways in which they circulate in the environment. Current knowledge on the degradation and half-life of estrogen compounds and the cycles of transformation of estrogen compounds are presented. Part of this paper provides an overview of knowledge about the effects of elevated estrogen levels on the health of humans, animals and plants, and describes the way in which plants accumulate estrogenic compounds. The aim of this paper is to warn about the consequences of the excessive use of estrogenic compounds in agriculture, as medication and food supplements. Also, it is still necessary to carry out additional and more detailed research on the presence of these contaminants in ecosystems in different parts of the world.
