Parallel abstract (English) | The existing literature shows that the total energy intake and the frequency of snacking have increased, as well as contribution of energy from snacks. The aim of this study was to determine energy value and nutrient composition of snacks in toddlers. A 24-hour recall was conducted on 19 toddlers age 31 to 36 months. The results have showed that toddlers had an adequate number of meals and snacks which provided about 36% of their daily energy intake. Snacks were a good source of carbohydrates, calcium and vitamin C, while the intake of fiber and vitamin D was low. Morning snacks were consumed by all toddlers. Fruits, milk, sweets, sweetened beverages and water were the most frequently snack food. Considering the sizeable contribution that snacks make toward overall energy and nutrients intake, it is important that food choice in snacks is appropriate, therefore the education of parents is necessary. |
