Utjecaj deterdženata na preživljavanje alge Euglena gracilis

Abstract

Deterdženti su jedni od najčešće upotrebljavanih kemikalija u svakodnevnom životu. Njihova prisutnost u vodenom okolišu, u koji dospijevaju putem septičkih jama ili javne kanalizacije, može izazvati različite učinke na vodene organizme. Cilj ovog rada bio je procijeniti toksičnost uobičajeno upotrebljavanih deterdženata za pranje rublje, Ariela i Persila na Euglena gracilis kao biotestnog organizma. Kao krajnje točke određivanja toksičnosti ispitivanih deterdženata, proučavani su različiti parametri: pokretljivost, oblik stanica i koncentracija pigmenata, a rezultati su dobiveni inkubacijom tijekom različitih vremena: 0, 6, 24 i 72 h. Nakon 72 sata izloženosti deterdžentima, koncentracije klorofila a i karotenoidi su bile znatno niže u uzorcima s koncentracijama Ariela i Persila od 50 mg/L i većim, dok je koncentracija klorofila b značajno smanjena tek iznad 750 mg/L dodanih deterdženata. Pokretljivost i oblik stanica izrazito su se promijenili odmah nakon dodatka deterdženata, no s vremenom izloženosti, E. gracilis je pokazala sposobnost prilagodbe na stres, što je potvrđeno rezultatima dobivenim nakon 72 h izloženosti, koji su bili viši od rezultata dobivenih odmah nakon izlaganja deterdžentima.

Abstract (english)

Synthetic detergents are among the commonly used chemicals in everyday life. Detergents, reaching aquatic environments through domestic and municipal wastewater, can cause many different effects in aquatic organisms. The present study was aimed at the toxicity evaluation of a commonly used laundry detergents, Ariel and Persil, using the flagellate Euglena gracilis as a biotest organism. Different parameters of the flagellate like motility, cell shape, and concentration of light harvesting pigments were used as end points for the toxicity assessment, and observed results were calculated at four different incubation times, i. e. 0, 6, 24 and 72 h. After 72 h exposure to the detergents, chlorophyll a and total carotenoids were significantly decreased in cultures treated with Ariel and Persil at concentration of 50 mg L-1 and above, while chlorophyll b significantly decreased at concentrations above 750 mg L-1. Motility and cell shape were strongly impaired immediately upon exposure to the detergents, but with increasing exposure time E. gracilis showed acclimatization to the stress and thus results obtained after 72 h were higher than those immediately after exposure.
