Abstract

Osim važne uloge vitamina D u održavanju homeostaze kalcija i fosfora te zdravlja koštano-mišićnog sustava, sve se više ističe njegovo imunomodulacijsko djelovanje na stanice imunosnog sustava. Potencijalna uloga vitamina D u imunosnom sustavu opisana je otkrićem vitamin D receptora (VDR-a) u monocitima, dendritičkim stanicama te u aktiviranim limfocitima T i B. Istovremeno s porastom saznanja o imunomodulacijskim učincima vitamina D raste zabrinutost zbog sve veće prevalencije nedostatka vitamina D. Brojne epidemiološke studije ukazuju na povezanost nedostatka vitamina D i veće incidencije autoimunih bolesti kao što su dijabetes, multipla skleroza, upalne bolesti crijeva, sistemski eritemski lupus i reumatoidni artritis. Razmatra se mogućnost primjene vitamina D u liječenju ovih bolesti.

Abstract (english)

Except of the role of vitamin D in maintaining calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and the health of the musculoskeletal system, it is believed that its active form has immunomodulatory effects on cells of the immune system. The potential role of vitamin D in the immune system is described by the discovery of vitamin D receptor (VDR) in monocytes, dendritic cells and activated T and B lymphocytes. At the same time, with the rise in the knowledge about the immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D, there is growing concern about the increasing prevalence of vitamin D deficiency. Numerous epidemiological studies support a connection between vitamin D deficiency and higher incidence of autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. The possibility of using vitamin D in the treatment of this disease is considered.
