Abstract

Unatoč velikom broju lijekova za epilepsiju, jedna trećina pacijenata ostaje bez adekvatne terapije te pate od epilepsije otporne na lijekove poznate kao refraktorna epilepsija. Učinkovit način za nošenje s epileptičnim napadajima i smanjivanje njihove frekvencije je ketogena dijeta. U toj dijeti 90% dnevnog unosa energije čine masti, ograničen je unos proteina te je minimalan unos ugljikohidrata kako bi se postiglo ketotično stanje u organizmu. Postoje mnoge teorije o mehanizmima ketogene dijete, te iako oni nisu u potpunosti razjašnjeni studije na djeci i odraslima pokazuju visoku učinkovitost i adekvatnu sigurnost te dijete kao tretmana u liječenju epilepsije, ali i nekih drugih bolesti.

Abstract (english)

Despite numerous pharmacological therapies for epilepsy, one third of the patients remain unaffected and suffer from epilepsy resistant to drugs known as refractory epilepsy. Ketogenic diet is an effective way to treat patients with refractory epilepsy and reduce seisure frequency. The diet consists of 90% fats of daily energy intake, along with limited amount of protein, and minimum intake of carbohydrates so that the ketotic state can be achieved. There are numerous theories dealing with possible mechanisms of ketogenic diet and although the exact mechanisms remain unknown, research has shown high effectiveness along with adequate safety for that diet to be used as a treatment for epilepsy in both children and adults, but also as a treatment for some other diseases.
