Abstract

Rod Bacillus obuhvaća velik broj bakterija različitih fizioloških i morfoloških karakteristika, koje imaju sposobnost sinteze mnogih komercijalnih proizvoda, poput enzima i vitamina, ali i mnoštvo molekula s antimikrobnom aktivnosti. Neistraženi sojevi ovoga roda potencijalni su producenti novih antimikrobnih metabolita, koji bi se mogli koristiti u suzbijanju infekcija i kontaminacija uzrokovanih tvorbom patogenih biofilmova. Poseban problem predstavljaju mikroorganizmi otporni na postojeće antibiotike i dezinfekcijska sredstva. Stoga je cilj ovog rada bio izolirati tri soja bakterija roda Bacillus iz uzoraka zemlje, ispitati njihova antimikrobna svojstva te potencijal njihovih metabolita u inhibiciji biofilmova nekih od najčešćih patogenih bakterijskih vrsta. Rezultati su pokazali da je najbolje antimikrobno djelovanje imao soj BCS-01, inhibirajući rast patogena Staphylococcus aureus za 43 %. Također, snažan inhibitorni učinak na formaciju biofilmova patogena imali su metaboliti prisutni u 5 %-tnom supernatantu uzgojnog medija soja BCS-03, koji su kod S. aureus postigli stupanj inhibicije od čak 82,2 %.

Abstract (english)

The genus Bacillus includes many different species of bacteria with different physiological and morphological characteristics, which can synthesize many commercial products, such as enzymes and vitamins, but also many different molecules with antimicrobial activity. Unknown strains of this genus are potential producers of new antimicrobial metabolites that could be used to suppress infections and contaminations caused by the formation of pathogenic biofilms. However, microorganisms resistant to most of the commonly used antibiotics and disinfectants present a great problem. Therefore, this work aimed to isolate three strains of Bacillus bacteria from samples of soil, and examine their antimicrobial properties, as well as the potential of their metabolites to inhibit the formation of biofilms of some of the commonest pathogenic bacterial species. The results showed that strain BCS-01 had the highest antimicrobial activity, inhibiting the growth of the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus by 43%. Also, the metabolites present in a 5% cell-free supernatant of the BCS-03 strain achieved an inhibition rate of as much as 82.2% with S. aureus biofilm.
