Abstract

Sindrom policističnih jajnika (PCOS) je heterogeni endokrinološki poremećaj kojeg karakteriziraju neredoviti menstruacijski ciklusi, akne, pojačana dlakavost te povećani rizik od kardiovaskularnih bolesti. Tijekom povijesti razvijali su se različiti dijagnostički kriteriji od kojih su najprihvaćeniji Rotterdamski kriteriji. PCOS je često povezan s inzulinskom rezistencijom koja može dovesti do razvoja kompenzacijske hiperinzulinemije. U liječenju PCOS-a mogu se koristiti oralni kontraceptivi ili metformin, međutim kao prvi korak u liječenju ističu se promjene životnih navika. Prehrana, osobito mediteranska, i suplementacija hranjivim tvarima mogu poboljšati simptome PCOS-a.

Abstract (english)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous endocrine disorder characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, acne, excess hair growth and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Throughout history, various diagnostic criteria have been developed, of which the most accepted are Rotterdam criteria. PCOS is often associated with insulin resistance that can lead to the development of compensatory hyperinsulinemia. Contraceptives or metformin can be used in the treatment of PCOS, however the first step in treatment should be the change of lifestyle habits. Diet, especially Mediterranean, and nutritional supplementation can improve PCOS symptoms.
