Abstract

Potencijal otpadnih voda za proces denitrifikacije uglavnom ovisi o raspoloživom biorazgradivom organskom ugljiku, izraženom kao omjer C/N. Za pročišćavanje otpadnih voda u kućanstvima minimalni omjer C/N iznosi 3,5-4,5 g KPK/gN, a vrijednosti C/N od približno 6-11 g KPK/g N mogu omogućiti uklanjanje N (na temelju izračuna). Kako bi se poboljšala učinkovitost uklanjanja N na uređaja za obradu otpadnih voda kućanstva, upotreba vanjskog izvora C za denitrifikaciju često je jedina mogućnost. Korištenjem mješovitog izvora C postiže se bolja učinkovitost uklanjanja N u usporedbi s konvencionalnim postupkom s jednim izvorom C, vjerojatno zbog heterogenosti heterotrofnih denitrificirajućih populacija i njihovih različitih brzina metaboliziranja pojedinog izvora C. Komercijalni izvori C omogućuju potpunu denitrifikaciju kako bi se postigli potrebni standardi otpadnih voda, ali predstavljaju značajan dodatni trošak. Stoga se nusproizvodi i otpadni materijali proizvedeni u velikim količinama i s visokim udjelom biorazgradivog organskog ugljika istražuju kao jeftiniji alternativni izvori C.

Abstract (english)

The denitrification potential of wastewater is mainly governed by the available biodegradable organic carbon, expressed as the C/N ratio. For domestic wastewater treatment, the minimum C/N ratio is 3.5–4.5 g COD/gN and C/N values of approximately 6–11 g COD/gN could allow a proper N removal (based on calculations). To improve the N-removal efficiency in domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) the use of an external C source for denitrification is often the sole possibility. By using a mixed C source better N-removal efficiencies are obtained, when compared with the conventional procedure with a single C source, probably due to the heterogeneity of heterotrophic denitrifying populations and their different metabolic rates for each C source. Commercial C sources allow complete denitrification to reach the required effluent standards but represent a significant added cost. Therefore, by-products and waste materials produced in large amounts and containing high biodegradable organic carbon content are explored as less costly alternative C sources.
