Abstract

Mikroorganizmi koji žive i rastu u neprivlačnim sredinama za ljude, poput zavrele ili smrznute vode, kisele ili alkalne sredine, područja visokog tlaka ili soli, uvjeta bez svjetla i kisika i sl., nazivaju se ekstremofili. Potraga za njima se danas sve više intenzivira, budući da su znanstvenici otkrili neka mjesta na Zemlji koja su se smatrala sterilnim, a u biti obiluju mikrobnim organizmima. Zbog lakšeg praćenja i svrstavanja novootkrivenih vrsta i jednostavnijeg shvaćanja djelovanja utjecaja okruženja na organizme ukazala se potreba za određivanjem različitih grupa ekstremofila. Novija saznanja o ekstremofilima, koja se temelje na ispitivanju prilagodbi koje su organizmi stekli kada su uvjeti na Zemlji bilo puno ekstremniji, otkrivaju nam informacije koje su od važnog značaja za područja poput biologije, genetike i biotehnologije. Posljednih godina povećao se interes za ekstremnim staništima i organizmima, zbog pitanja je li život moguć na drugim planetima poput Marsa, gdje su uvjeti životne sredine potpuno drugačiji od uvjeta na Zemlji, a slični onim u kojima upravo žive ekstremofili.

Abstract (english)

Microorganisms that live and grow in conditions detrimental to people, such as geysers or freezing water, acidic or alkaline environments, high pressure areas or salty environments, without light or oxygen and so on, are called extremophiles. Nowadays the search for them is intensifying, since the scientists have discovered some places on Earth that used to be considered sterile, but in fact abound in microorganisms. There has been a need to determine different groups of extremophiles in order to monitor and classify more efficiently newly discovered types and understand more easily how the environment affects organisms. Recent findings about extremophiles, based on testing the adjustments that the organisms acquired when the conditions on Earth were far more extreme, discover the information important for fields such as biology, genetics and biotechnology. In the past few years there has been a growing interest in extreme habitats and organisms because of the question of life being possible on other planets, such as Mars, where living conditions are completely different from conditions on Earth, and similar to those in which the extremophiles live.
